When the nerve inside a tooth becomes inflamed or infected, root canal treatment removes the damaged tissue, cleans and seals the canals, and lets you keep your own tooth. It’s done under local anesthetic — and many of our patients are surprised by how comfortable it is.

How it works
- 1Diagnosis
An exam and X-rays to check the nerve, the root and the bone around it.
- 2Cleaning the canals
Inflamed or infected tissue is removed, and the canals are cleaned and shaped — all under local anesthetic.
- 3Sealing
The canals are filled and fully sealed to stop infection coming back.
- 4Rebuilding the tooth
The tooth is restored, with a crown if needed to stop it from breaking.

Common questions
Does a root canal hurt?
It’s done under local anesthetic, so you shouldn’t feel pain during treatment. Our patients often tell us it was much easier than they expected.
Do I need a crown afterwards?
For many back teeth, a crown protects the treated tooth from breaking. We’ll decide after examining it.
